Olympics excite Korea once again

This Vancouver olympics was the most exciting Olympics of all. Especially for many Korean fans out there, this was the year when Korea proved that they were one of the most athletic countries out there. Korea might be small but never fails to stand up and tell the World that they are one of the World’s strongest country. We did not expect much from this Olympics, mostly because it was a winter Olympic tournament. Korea do not receive much snow therefore, the players have the disadvantages compared to other country’s players. Also this year we only had athletes going for short track, speed skating and figure skating. Which did not promise much medals in the Olympic rankings. However, the most spectacular thing happened to Korea. We got the Gold medal for almost all the events we participated, leading us to 4th place in the ranking of the most held medalist countries. The gold medal frenzy ended with an overwhelming performance by the number one figure skater Yoona Kim, who finished as a gold medalist with outstanding record. Yoona Kim is so famous now that she is in almost every T.V ad possible in a broadcasting studio.

Life of self learning

Life of Koreans, Life of APs, Life of SATs, majority of Korean students wake up with an apprehension for the next upcoming AP tests or the SATs. These tests are known as one of the hardest and most challenging tests to study for during the high school education level. Koreans are known as the record setter for the most hag-won visits during the life time. However, for many Koreans hag-won is simply a place for extra sleep, so that they have energy that will help them stay awake during the night. People do not know the real back story of “smart Korean students,” their daily schedules might be filled with mostly hag-won however, most of the studying goes on in their own houses. They drink approximately 10 cups of coffee each night, and stay awake until the sun starts to show its bright colors once again. Koreans have the ability to finish a whole book of Barrons AP or SAT books in a day. This surprises me because I can’t even seem to answer a page work of SAT questions without the urge to fall asleep. Us Koreans even use these study habits to socialize. It might be little nerdy, but most Koreans get girls by connecting with conversations about studying. How Sad….. But seems to work for the studious Korean students.

suicide

March 29th, a celebrity committed suicide. He is but one of the numerous celebrities that had taken their own lives amidst intensive pressure. He is, too, but one of the countless figures that represent the suicidal rates among Koreans. His name is Jin Young, Choi (39). Though the exact motive of his suicide is undetermined as of yet, it is highly possible that Choi could not withstand the depression that he had to endure after his sister, Korea’s famous actress Choi Jin Sil, had also taken her own life two years ago. Close relatives of Choi had professed that his sister was more than just a sibling to him; she was his mentor, his second mother and his best friend. The demise of such a treasured one could only plunge him into years of isolation. In addition, the baneful rumors that circulated around the Internet about Choi being directly connected to his sister’s suicide and the media’s constant attention to his private life had definitely taken a toll on his psychological health. Choi’s suicide, however, is reflective of the problems plaguing the whole of Korean society. The expansion of the media has seen paparazzi inspecting the lives of public figures for 24 hours a day. Their incentives job promotions and personal fame, their goals to cover the most unheard of–but interesting–news, the paparazzi have been responsible for baseless rumors. In addition, Koreans’ inquisitive nature had only tired the lives of many celebrities that were desperately in need of rest from the personal space.

SAT

“If they can do that in South Korea, we can do it right here in the United States.” Barack Obama addressed the 19th Legislative Conference of the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, lauding the Korean education system. True, the passion of students–more accurately the parents–seems to have no limit as academies a.k.a “hagwon”s are fast becoming the new centers of business. But what exactly is the Korean system like? What is the factor that distinguishes it from other OECD countries’ educations? The bustling of academies has been a phenomenon that was directly the result of an education fervor. Convinced that only good education would lead to their child’s success, parents began to enroll them into after-school classes. Due to the fact that private teachers could teach in a better environment and yield even better results, every parent in Seoul soon started searching high and low for famous private institutions.

national sport

The “game wave” had especially taken over the whole of Korean society, to the extent where professional gamers are treated as celebrities and earn more than an average white-collar worker. The fact that just last year, the Korean game team had triumphed in the World Cyber Games (WCG) tells us how intense and popular the gaming business is here. (Read news: http://itnews.korea.com/korea-conquers-wcg/) Such signs of a game wave is both a good sign (of people finding leisure amidst the fierce competition) and a worrying one (of how games are speedily taking over the lives and ambitions of young minds). Judging from the gradual actions the government had begun to take–game penalties imposed on overplaying players and consulting centers aimed at treating the addiction–the trend has been overly Perhaps due to the fast spreading trend and culture, StarCraft has become an everyday life, a profitable business and a national sport.

fashion

To enhance public popularity, brands often follow trends and attempt to make one. With fashionable items that keep up to date with the preferences of consumers of various age groups, brands survive and prosper. For instance, the popularity of skinny jeans, high-top shoes has seen brands adapt to the changing fashion and modifying their styles to suit the taste of many. Hence, companies invest in billions of dollars for a brand, for once it succeeds, a brand would rake in huge sums of money and would be able to last for decades. Though it needs large investments and research, the return cost–if there is any–would be invaluable.

9/11

One day I went to the book store and saw SuperFreakonomics on the best seller section. Right away, I grabbed the book and went to the cashier to buy the book because I knew this sequel would be great as the original, Freakonomics. I read Freakonomics long time ago, when I was a bit young to understand all the content that are somewhat radical and new. The book itself is designed for adults so that I had to think a lot about some of the stories that Levitt and Dubner tell. I thought now that I’m more mature, it would be easier for me to understand. Nonetheless, this sequel just shocks me every second when I read on the sentences. Polluting the stratosphere to prevent global warming??!! I thought we had to save energy and produce less carbon dioxide for global cooling, but in statistics, the United States’ ground temperature actually rose 1.1 degrees celsius when all flights were canceled for three days after the 9/11 terror. In SuperFreakonomics, Steven Levitt and Stephen Dubner explicitly convey their message to the readers through interesting stories. The book divides up to five different enthralling chapters, believe me. The bits of information that seem irrelevant to the topic somehow support the idea that Levitt and Dubner is trying to establish. It is just fascinating how they connect one idea to the other and conclude in a totally radical concept. I strongly recommend you to read this book because I guarantee you will not only know why suicide bombers should buy life insurance but also the opportunity to change your way of thinking… they do not buy life insurance because they have nowhere to spend their money on before they die!!! Enjoy!
